Workshop 2: Linking themes to the impact ogf Angles, movements and shots

Brainstorm:

  • What is happening in this shot
The other waybie is standing outside of the house on the the stairs. The other mother ask him to smile from the doorway, instead he frowns.

The other Waybie making self smaller-less of a target-head down, shoulders hunched. Looks weak and vulnerable.
  • Angle/shot used
High angle- makes Wybie look overpowered, weak and vulnerable.

POV-Other mother, makes her seem stronger, bigger, and more dominate.
  • How does the viewer feel?

Viewer: Makes viewer feel sorry for / scared for other  Wybie.

    • Why did the directer do this?
Foreshadowing - hinting at was is to come - hinting that maybe the other mother isn't so wonderful.
    • Additional info- music/lighting/colour
Lighting - spot light on Wybie - like hes on the spot/under focus -dark around creates creepy atmosphere

In the scene with the other mother and the other Wybie we see high angle shots used to show the theme ´looks can be deceiving. We see this when the other mother asks the other Wybie to smile but he hunches over and frowns instead. This makes the audience feel sorry for the other Wybie, because he looks scared. The use of a high angle shot from the perspective of the other mother adds to this feeling as it makes the other Wybie look weak and vulnerable. The director did this to foreshadow the change from the other mother from creepy to more creepy. Coinciding with this is the use of lighting a spotlight is on the other Wybie emphasising that he is under the focus of the other mother. This reminds us of earlier in the film where a low angle shot was used to make Wybie look big and scary, be in reality he just ordinary person. This link to the scene because it also shows a moment when the look of a character was deceiving.

    Science, the arthritis

    The causes of arthritis:
A reduction in the normal amount of this cartilage tissue cause some forms of arthritis. Normal wear and tear causes OA, one of the most common forms of arthritis. An infection or injury to the joints can increase this natural breakdown of cartilage tissue.

The cause of arthritis is not fully known. It is thought that some people who are genetically prepared to develop the disease after they are exposed to environmental triggers. Other forms of arthritis can be caused by problems  with the immune system or by a metabolic condition, such as gout.

    Who often gets arthritis?:
People of all ages, sexes and races can and do have arthritis, and it is the leading causes of disability in America. More than 50 million adults and 300,000 children have some type of arthritis. It is most common among women and occurs more frequently as people get older.

Two most common types of arthritis:
Two common types of arthritis are Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a painful, degenerative joint disease that often involves the hips, knees, neck, lower back, or small joints of the hand.

    Best ways to prevent arthritis:
    1. Maintain a healthy weight. ...
    2. Don't smoke, or quit smoking. ...
    3. Try to avoid injury when playing sports or participating in recreational activities.
    4. If your job requires a lot of pushing, pulling, or lifting of heavy objects, take precautions to avoid injury to your joints.

    How its treated:
Treatment of arthritis generally includes rest, occupational or physical therapy, exercise, drugs, and sometimes surgery to correct joint damage. Treatments for osteoarthritis generally can help relieve pain and stiffness, but the disease may continue to progress.

Workshop 1: Unpacking themes and ideas??

    Themes and ideas:
Continuous idea/subject that links throughout the text.

    Looks can be deceiving:
Something that can look very different from how it seems to appear.

2 examples that look being deceiving in the film:

    • Character of Wybie-When first him, he looks scary and spooky, and the scary music makes Wybie more look more scary. Also, at the start, Wybie looks bigger, than Caroline from a high angle, and he starts off with him on a frightening looking motorcycle with the lighting striking down from the back, but in reality, he is just a nice person and a kind person.
    Theme:
    • Shows theme- because like other characters, our first impressions based on appearance, tone visual, techniques arent always correct.
    • Important- because helps audience understand with Caroline that just because something looks good doesn't meant it is she should choose the real world over the other world.
    Character of the other mother:
    • She seems friendly and kind to Caroline than the other mum. At the start the other mother is nice and respectful, but then by the end she becomes a soul devouring spider demon.
    • Shows theme-because other mother isn't what she appears to be at the start so we shouldn't judge by first impression. At the start she seems nice and friendly, but at the end she is very different to what she was
    • Important because Caroline realises that having something that looks perfed isn't always a good thing.
Statement-In Caroline, the theme looks can be deceiving is used effectively to engage the audience.
Evidence-For instance, the character of the ¨Other mother¨ show us that looks can be deceiving because she begins being as a kind mother figure, but gradually changes into a
    eXplanation
    audience
-This makes us understand that we shouldn't judge a character, based on first impression as they can often be wrong.
    eXplanation
    directer:
-Thisnis done to help Caroline to decide between the real world and the other world. If the ¨Other mother¨was really perfect Caroline wouldn't choose to go home.
    eXplanation
Another technique-Combined with this is the use of colour and lighting. The ¨Other mother¨"first appears in a vibration bright room that makes us feel warm and safe. However, by the end it has become dark and green  which makes the viewer feel scared and shows that her first look was deceiving
Your link-This can be juxtaposed to the character of wybie who we think at first is evil but is actually kind, proving looks can be deceiving.

    P.E

    What we did:
Today for P.E We got to try out a new activity, which is called ¨Speeed Stack¨. Speed stack is a activity that is used with, cups and a table in front. Secondly, today we practised how to stack the cups up, and stack them down. First we had to stack the cups 3 by 3, then we got better, and we went up a level, and stacked 3 by 6.

How to stack the 3 by 6 stack:
Today I learned how to stack cups 3 by 3. Also I learned how to rotate the 3 by 6 stack.

How to do the 3 by 3 stack, is that you take off 1 cup from the stack, place it on what ever side you think your more comfortable with, then place the 2nd cup on the other side of the cup you placed first, then stack the last on top of the 2 cups, but place it in the centre of both cups to create the 3 by 3.

How to rotate the 6 stack, is you take 3 cups out of the stack, then take 2 out of the stack, place one down from the 3 beside the stack, then place down one from the 2 you grabbed on the other side of the stacks, then stack the other 2 cups in the top of the bottom row, then finally, stack the last cup on top of the 2 cups to create the 3 by 6 stack.

How to take unstack the cups:
How to unstack the 3 by 6 stacks, is that you have to take out sides first and then stack the rest of the cups on to the cups that are not stacked with anything.

    Episode 3 - Learn The 3-6-3 Stack - YouTube

How to unstack the 3 by 3 cups, is that how you put them up, you take them down from the other side. You grab the top cup, put it on whatever cup that takes you to the end and then stack the other cup, that simple.

    Philippine history's:

    The old Philippines name:
The Philippines was named in honour of king Philip ll of Spain. Spanish explore Ruy Lo´pez de Villalobos, during his expedition in 1542, named the islands of Leyte and Filipinas would be used to cover all the islands of the archipelago.

The first man to discover the Philippines:
Schools tell their students, that Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines, in the 16th century, which is not true. Ferdinand Magellan may be the first European to set foot in the Philippines, but the Philippines has been inhabited by people for hundreds of years, way before the Spanish.
