Engeeniring - Lockdown homework

Method on how I marked out my drill gage

  1. Use the 300mm steel ruler to measure out how long you want your drill gage to become, then use a scriber to mark it out.

  2. Once again, use the steel ruler to measure 10cm at the top of the drill gage. Make sure to mark a line with a scriber.

  3. On the line, use the steel ruler to mark the centre of the line, to know where to hammer in the centre punch.

  4. Centre punch the centre of the line.

  5. Use a divider to round the top of the drill gage.

  6. Lastly use a Engineer’s square to measure

The purpose of each tool

  1. Centre punch - The purpose of a centre punch was to make a hole so that you can hang the drill gage wherever you want.

  2. Scriber - This is used to mark anything on my project.

  3. 300mm steel ruler - The use of the steel ruler is to help me measure the measurements I was ordered to measure.

  4. Dividers - The purpose of the divider is to help mark around the top of the drill gage.

After lockdown/covid we will then begin to use the last two tools that we havn't used yet which is a Vernier calipers, and a Micrometer. I will be explaining what they are used for and how they are used...

Vernier calipers: A vernier scale is a visual aid to take an accurate measurement reading between two graduation markings on a linear scale by using mechanical interpolation, thereby increasing resolution and reducing measurement uncertainty by using vernier acuity to reduce human estimation error.

Micrometer: A micrometer is a device incorporating a calibrated screw widely used for accurate measurement of components in mechanical engineering and machining as well as most mechanical trades, along with other meteorological instruments such as dial, vernier, and digital calipers.

Darwinism - survival of the fittest -

Survival of the fittest is a phrase from Darwinism evolution theory as a way of describing the tool of natural selection. The biological concept of fitness is defined as reproductive success.

Why Genetics disorders occurs -

Gene disorders can be caused by a mutation in one gene (monogenic disorder), by mutations in multiple genes (multifactorial inheritance disorder), by a combination of gene mutations and environmental factors, or by damage to chromosomes (changes in number or structure of entire chromosomes.

Volleyball technique - How to make a success pass

Tips for passing in volleyball -

  1. It is best to get your body directly behind the ball and pass the ball from the middle line of your body. Your body should be facing your target while taking a small step with either foot while passing.

  1. Make sure your legs should be wide apart when passing the ball for movement, also so you can move easier and quicker.

  1. Your shoulders should be squared with the oncoming ball, and should be always facing towards the ball in order to deliver a successful pass to your partner.

It is important to keep your arm relaxed, not stiff when going for a pass, so that your pass can be secure and perfect. If your arms are not relaxed, and are stiff, your pass can go off and it can cause a bad, unsuccessful pass.

DNS Extraction Experiment

Aim - To extract the DNA from a kiwi fruit.

Method -

  1. Mush half kiwi fruit in a zip lock bag with a splash of water and a small teaspoon of salt
  2. Strain the solution through a cloth into a beaker.
  3. Add a squirt of dishwashing liquid and stir.
  4. Pour into a test tube.
  5. Place the test tube in a beaker filled with WARM water.
  6. Leave for 10 minute.
  7. Slowly pour 5mL of methylated spirits down the inside of the test

Reasults -

Discussion - Most DNA is located in the cell nucleus, but a small amount of DNA can also be found in the mitochonderia.

DNA is made of chemical building blocks called nucleotides. These building blocks are made of three parts: a phosphate group, a sugar group and one of four types of nitrogen bases.

We humans still share about 60% of the same DNA as humans as bananas.

Conclusion - This experiment was a succes, but next time we could do this differently.

Nuremberg Laws

Since taking power in 1933 the Nazis had taken increasingly unfair actions against German Jews. In 1935 Nuremberg Laws, Jews were deprived of German citizenship and marriages between Jews and ‘Aryan” Germans were prohibited. Initially many Jews lost their jobs in the public service. German Jews also lost the right to vote. In 1938 ‘Kristallnacht’ resulted in large-scale attacks against Jews. Many Jews died in these riots. Hundreds of synagogues were burned and thousands of Jews were arrested and placed in concentration camps. As a result of these events, the future for German Jews looked frightening.

Hitler's hate towards the Jews

This week in class we are learning about hitlers antisemitism and hate for the jews, and how the Holocaust was made. In 1941, before WW2, Hitler stated two statements, that shows all his hate towards the Jews

The two quotes -

  1. "The jews are responsible for bringing negroes into the Rhineland with the ultimate idea of bastardizing the white race."

  2. "The Jewish youth lies in wait for hours on end spying on the unsuspicious German girl he plans to seduce; he wants to contaminate her blood and remove the bosom from her own people."

This shows how Hitler thought the Jews were trying to be superior and actions needed to be taken as soon as possible. He unsurprsing took the action casuing the events of the Holocaust.

The great depression

In 1929 the Wall Street Crash led to a worldwide depression. Germany suffered more than any other nation. The economic depression was a public fear that shocked the whole world. The economic depression was the Great depression of 1929 which lasted ten years and forced millions into unemployment, homelessness, and near starvations. As a result of the recall of US loans, which caused its economy to collapse. Unemployment rocketed, poverty soared and Germans became desperate. This led to a chain of events that ended in the destruction of German democracy. In 1932, the US was also hit by the Great depression. 15 million people, more than 20 percent of the US population at the time, were all unemployed, compared to  Germany, the whole population of Germany were affected by the Great depression. The unemployment numbers of people began off from 1.4 million to over 2 million. By the time hitler became Chancellor in January 1933, one in three Germans were unemployed, with the number hitting from 2 million to 6.1 million.

The treaty of Versailles was made to take the power away from Germany. The number of soldiers in the German army went from 6 million to 100 thousands. The treaty got rid of their submarines, military aircraft and artillery and reduced their navy to 6 small battleships. They also had to pay for the cost of the war they caused in WW1. Germany’s WW1 was so crushing, it took them 92 years to pay off. Hitler also agreed to take no military action without further discussion, and Chamberlain agreed to try to persuade his cabinet and the French to accept the results of a plebiscite in the Sudetenland.

For New Zealand, as for most of the world outside Russia, the great depression of the early 1930s was the most broken economic experience ever recorded. The wall street crash of October 1929 generally recognised as the event that triggered the Great Depression.
